The Perfect Throw Pillow Ensemble

When it comes to creating that perfect throw pillow ensemble, it can be hard to pair the right ones together while still looking aesthetically pleasing. Colour palette, size, shape, texture and pattern all play a big roll in your overall throw pillow design. Here are a few of our tried and true rules you can follow to create that perfect pillow combo!

First you want to establish the colour palette you would like to work with. Do you want rich, deep jewel toned accent pillows, or prefer softer, more muted pastels? Mix and match a few complimentary colours within your palette that have some similar hues. And don’t forget to add in some neutral tones as a base!

The next step is to add in some pattern. My go to rule is to create a good balance of scale and form when mixing patterns. A small scale geometric pattern looks great against a larger scale stripe and a medium scale floral pattern.

The accent pillows in these living rooms below work well together because they are different tones of colour from the same hue, have a neutral tone thrown in, and have various patterns with opposing scale.

Make sure to add texture! You can achieve this by varying the materials of the pillow cover from velvet to linen or boucle. Pillows with tassels, fringe or embroidered details are also a great way to add in some texture.

Finally, the size of your pillows are key for creating a layered look. Pair larger base pillows with slightly smaller pillows of the same shape. Lumbar pillows are also great to add in, especially when working with pillow combinations for the bedroom.

Pairing the perfect throw pillows can be a challenging task, but following these tips will make it even easier for you create the perfect throw pillow ensemble.
