Everything you need to know about buying the perfect rug!

Rugs are the one thing that bring the full room design all together. Without one, a room can look unfinished. Rugs may be a staple piece, but there are some key rules you should follow in order for it to fit in your space perfectly. Size, material, and colours all play a big roll in choosing the perfect rug for you!

Choosing the right size for your rug can be hard, but is very important. Rugs need to fit a space without taking away from a smooth and easy traffic flow. In a living room, you want the rug big enough to reach the front legs of all the furniture. A rug in a dining room should be big enough so that when you pull a chair out, it is always on the rug. This prevents it from getting caught on the edge when you are pushing it back in towards the table. Having a rug that’s too big in any space, can take away from the overall design and swallow up the furniture, but having a rug that’s too small can make your space appear smaller or unfinished. That being said, in an open space layout, rugs also section off specific areas of the home. Make sure to always measure the area you are working in before making this important purchase!

If you are someone who has carpet in their home, don’t worry, rugs are still encouraged! Choosing a low pile rug to place over carpet, is a great design choice. This creates more dimension, adds colour, and pulls the whole design concept together.

Layering isn’t just for the clothing world. Layering rugs is like jackets and cardigans, completes the look!. It is popular to layer over a jute rug because so many people love the look of jute but they are not very comfortable under foot. Adding a low pile rug over a jute rug gives you the best of both worlds. The style and look of jute, with the comfort. Layering also creates dimension and adds extra texture into a space.

There are many different materials out there that are use in rugs, but what is worth it and what should you stay away from?

Polyester and polypropylene are very popular materials used to create rugs. They’re durable with kids and pets, there is an endless amount of patterns and designs out there, and they are comfortable under foot. A drawback to them though, is that their life span is short because they are produced on a mass scale.

Wool is another good choice. Wool is beautifully made, eco- friendly, soft under foot and is a durable material. Wool does tend to shed and pull, and if you have animals, their nails can snag the rug.

Jute is another popular material in rugs. It is affordable and aesthetically they look nice in homes. Jute can also be used in indoor and outdoor spaces. Though popular, they do cause some issues for people. Jute is not a comfortable material to stand on, and it absorbs lots of moisture in a humid environment. This can cause it to fray and shed.

Hide is one material you don’t see very often. Despite the unique, one of a kind beauty and soft feel, hide has some cons to it. Hide is hard to clean, and comes in a very limited amount of sizes. It also is not an animal friendly material.

Viscose can be seen in many rugs. It can replicate the sheen and texture of silk, while being more affordable. It does however, stain easily and is not kid and pet friendly.

Silk is a beautiful one of a kind material to use. The pattern on these rugs is very unique and soft. Silk is an expensive material to use and is also not kid and pet friendly.
