Boys Bathroom inspiration and a mood board

One of the first projects of the year we are going to tackle is revamping the boys bathroom. We haven't done anything to it since moving in 3 years ago and it is in a sad state of affairs! (I'll be posting some before pics when we start the reno!) Since this is also our guest bathroom, I want it to have a sophisticated feel with a touch of whimsy to make it a fun space for the boys to be in. After fiddling around on Olioboard and came up with a mood board to get the creative juices flowing.

Currently we have a standard builders grade white vanity with a solid white top that I'm not too crazy about. We have considered replacing the vanity with a dark wood one, but are also looking at other options of refinishing...maybe even tackling painting it ourselves. Maybe. It's melamine and I'm a little apprehensive of how the paint will adhere. I'd love to hear of any success/failures any of you have had with painting melamine, or any other type of cabinetry for that matter.

I love the look of white beadboard in the bathroom and would love to finish it off with wide trim and some fun chrome hooks for the boys to put their towels on. For the colour scheme for the walls I'm leaning towards a silvery grayish blue.

We the hubby will also be replacing the tub and tiling the floor and walls which I would love to do in a white marble looking tile with maybe some fun blue glass tile or penny tile accent, but the hubby keeps reminding me of his limited tile setting skills so I may have to scale back my ambitions just a little bit! boo:(

And for the fun touch of whimsy I am loving the chartreuse accessories mixed in with the grey/blue combo. A fun rug, towels and some quirky wall art keep the bathroom from being to stuffy. How fun is this soap on a rope from CB2?!

Are you in the same boat as me and want to make a fun bathroom for your kids without it looking like your local Gymboree? Here are a few ideas on how to make your bathroom kid friendly without compromising style.

Bright and colourful prints are a perfect way to add a little whimsy to your space! And the best part is you can change them out as the kids grow and you tire of them. Here are a few I came across on Etsy.

Tile is more of a permanent application, but these bubble glass tiles are so fun! And Modern too!

Loving these numbered hooks using simple house numbers found at your local hardware store. And the striped walls give the room a real nautical feel.

Add a brightly coloured step stool ads a pop of colour.

Add a whimsical rug like this owl one from Target.

Add a quirky hamper like this one from Pottery Barn Kids.

Or add some eclectic accessories like this grassy toothbrush holder from The Container Store.

Here's some other great ideas for bathrooms that are fun and whimsical yet sophisticated too.
