Who Do I Need to Hire When Building a Custom Home? We're Glad You Asked...

You've been saving, dreaming and planning for years and the time is finally right to start the process of building your dream home. The thrill and excitement of creating a custom home is almost always followed by an sense of overwhelm about where to start and who to hire. Today I'm sharing who you should have on your team to ensure your new build runs smoothly and with less stress.

Essential Hire #1: The Architect

The Architect is usually the first person involved in the new build process. They will work along side you to take your ideas and turn them into blueprints. They not only design the building to be visual pleasing, functional and structurally sound, they also create the construction drawings necessary to obtain permits.

Essential Hire #2: The Interior Designer

The role of the Interior Designer is to bring the blueprints to life. The Designer is responsible for not only how the finished home will look, but how it will function for your particular needs. They will thoughtfully select materials and finishes that line up with your vision aesthetically, and also use their professional knowledge to recommend the materials that best suit your lifestyle and your budget. Hiring a designer to handle all the details not only reduces the clients decisions load, it also and saves the client time and money.

The designers will also often create all the interior plans and design details including cabinetry plans and elevations for the cabinet maker. These are often done with 3D software to help the client to visualize the finished space.

Designers work in tandem with the contractor to communicate all details and selections to the appropriate sub trades, ensuring orders are submitted in a timely fashion. They are also often on site to check in on progress and troubleshoot any issues that may arise.

Essential Hire #3: The Builder

The Builder or Contractor are the ones that take the Architect’s blue prints and the Interior Designers vision and put it into motion. They are responsible for hiring and co-ordinating all sub-trades, ensuring all safety codes are met and implementing the design set forth by the designer. They also ensure deadlines are met and oversee every detail that go into building of the home.

Bonus Tip: How Best to Hire Your Team

Planning is essential when it comes to building your home, and hiring your team members early in the process will ensure you have the right people behind you every step of the way. In my experience, the best way to find and hire the expert is to ask for a referral. If a friend or family member has worked with an Architect, Designer or Builder in the past, ask them how their experience was. They will be able to give you a first hand account of what the process was like. If you have one team member already lined up already, ask them for a recommendation! They will have inside experience working with different professionals and usually base their recommendations based off of prior collaborations. Once you have a recommendation or two, reach out to the professionals for a meeting to discuss your project and determine if they might be the right fit for your new build.

Ensuring you have the right people on your team can make a world of difference in building your dream home. Not only can they ensure the home is designed to your functional and aesthetic preferences, they will save you time and money in the long run by avoiding expensive mistakes.
