Bye Bye crib…hello Big Boy Bed!!

A couple of months ago, we finally got rid of the crib and switched Carson into a big boy bed. We promised him we would buy him one after he was completely potty trained, so when we finally ditched the diapers, off to IKEA we went!!
We knew we wanted to get him a double bed and one that was low to the ground, and I really didn’t want to spend a fortune on a good bed knowing all too well that he would most likely trash it within  a few years.
He had a blast hopping in all the beds and trying them out (the sales ladies were not to impressed with me, but whatever….we didn’t break anything and they were happy!! That’s all that matters on a shopping trip, am I right?!) After playing goldilocks for a while, we settled on this Malm double bed frame in Medium brown. We already had a dresser in this color, so we wanted to match it.

It’s modern, simple and low to the ground. We didn’t even need to put rails up. Perfect for our little 3 year old!! Why a double you ask?! Well, personally I think transitioning to a toddler bed is just silly. It only lasts a year or so then you have to go and buy another bed when they outgrow it, and another mattress, and more bedding, etc. etc. Plus we always have lots of friends and family that come and visit, so it would also serve for an extra place to sleep.
So now that the baby furniture is gone and the new bed is in, it’s the perfect time for a complete toddler room overhaul! Carson’s room hasn’t changed at all since he was born. It actually hasn’t changed since his older brother was born! When I found out I was pregnant again, Cole was only 10 months (yup, you read that right…oy vey) so we just moved Cole out of the nursery and the new baby in.
Nursery Collage

Not very exciting, I know, but we didn’t find out with either of our kids if we were having a boy or girl, so the nursery was decorated in the traditional green and yellow. This picture was taken 5 years ago. Although I loved the fabrics and colors at the time (these were my first pair of curtains I ever made and was so proud of them!) my tastes have change tremendously since then! I did spruce up the room a little bit over the years but it’s still green. Time for a change.

I had this idea in my head for a while now to re-do his room with white walls and pops of navy and lime green with some retro-modern touches. Nothing themed. Not a fan of the theme. But after talking to Carson and asking his input on what he would like in his room, he seems to be bent on having a sports theme. With dinosaurs.
After many failed attempts of  trying to convince him of something different, I realized that this room makeover is really not about me, it’s about this little man.

I want his room to be a fun place for him to spend time in & most importantly it should reflect his personality. And boy does he have personality!!
So I went to work putting together a mood board for his room that would have a sports “feel” to it without all the kitschy themed sports paraphernalia, and this is what we (Carson included!) came up with.
Carsons Big Boy Room Mood Board

I changed my original color scheme to now include navy, red & grey. I plan on painting the walls a nice light silver grey and adding lots of punches of red and navy. Incorporating some fun geometric fabrics will give the room a fun and youthful feel.
We picked up this neat red locker cabinet from Ikea for $99. I plan on adding some shelving about it for some books and fun knick-knacks…maybe even a dinosaur or two!
We love reading in this house, so I wanted to create a small reading nook for him to have a quiet place to look at his books. The kid size POÄNG chair also from IKEA is the perfect size to fit in a corner, and I may make a mini-pouf or footstool to go along with it. Some wire baskets and a few fun modern sports prints from Etsy will give the room the feel I'm looking for without going overboard on a theme.
I also have this channel letter that I picked up from an antique show earlier in the year that I will be incorporating into the room too.

I am really going to try and stick to a budget to finish off this room….$280. That’s the amount of money we recently made at a kids consignment sale where we sold a ton of baby gear & baby toys. (I do still have the drapes, matching crib skirt & basket liners available! Message me if you are interested!) It’s definitely do-able since I have all the big pieces of furniture already. This is what I have on the to-do list so far:
            • Paint
            • Window treatments
            • Shelving
            • Art & accessories
            • Bedding
            • Throw pillows
            • Floor pouf
            • End tables
            • Accent Lighting
I also created a pinboard for Carson’s room on Pinterest where I will be pinning all the sources for the fabrics, furniture, bedding etc. that I use in this room along with pricing. You can follow along here. I’m hoping to have this room done before the holidays, so I guess I better get crackin’!!
